Focuses upon the visual grammar and language syntax of time-based communication and motion graphics and explores concepts and techniques involved in the integration of images, typography, digital video and audio into vibrant and persuasive communication environments. Prerequisite: Third-year or fourth-year standing in the BDes Program or permission of the Department of Design. Course credit exclusion: FA/YSDN 3009 3.00
The course aims to provide students with an understanding of the creative and formal aspects of time-based communication and motion design from conceptual, contextual, aesthetic and technical points of view. The course draws from design, animation and cinematic practices as students explore conventional and experimental approaches when actuating their projects and exercises.
With knowledge of principles of print-based communication, typography and theories of visual communication, graphic designers need to develop skill sets and understanding of processes and techniques involved in creating and defining existing and new forms of time-based media.
This course introduces theories and formal aspects of motion design to the students as they gain, through individual and collaborative work, a conceptual understanding of the role time and motion have in the presentation of visual content. Differences and similarities between subjective and objective forms of expression, individual and public interpretation of information, and user intellectual and emotional engagement in the experience are also investigated. New production and delivery formats offer multiple outputs for producing and delivering motion design projects. Students explore various software and hardware alternatives and assess the implications of their choices on the conceptual and technical accessibility of their work.
This course consists of creative production of projects, exercises and research assignments, lectures, critiques, discussions, readings, screenings, hands-on demonstrations and presentations. Emphasis will be placed on the exploration of the contextual meanings of time-based design and motion graphics, visual syntax, visual and aural expression, technical experimentation, and documentation of the design process. Exercises, readings and projects assigned will take place primarily outside of scheduled class time.
The purpose of this course is to facilitate the student’s investigation of visual grammar and creative strategies in motion design. Upon completion of this course students will demonstrate the ability to:
