This exercise continues your exploration of formal, temporal and sequential aspects of moving images and conceptual, technical and workflow elements relevant to motion design. Additionally, you will consider typography in motion—legibility, readability and communication—within a short duration. In response to your Sound Essay and as a source of inspiration for movement, tone and mood create a 5-10 second typography motion design.
What You Will Do
Adjective Mash-Up
- Create a name by mixing syllables from three separate, three-syllable adjectives.
- The resulting name should then be given an imaginary event, product, organization, campaign, cause, service, company etc... to represent.
- Start this component in class. Brainstorm, see how many you can come up with.

Design your Animation
- For this assignment you are welcome to use after effects or any software and/or practical animation techniques (any animation style) of your choice. You are welcome to mix approaches as well.
- Together using your sound essay and the name you invent in the adjective mash-up exercise, create an animated title card/animated logo/wordmark for the institution, organization, cause, campaign, event or company
- Ensure that you consider all design elements as you approach and then make your animation. This includes:
- Exploring keyframes, and animation principles like timing, eases, anticipation and squash and stretch, overlapping action etc.
- Compositional elements - colour, texture, size and shape of your type to further explore mood, style and appeal.
- Editing Transitions (spatial, rhythmic, temporal and graphic)
- Provide end credits with your name, course and the date. The length of this sequence is 5-10 seconds long not including the end credits.
- Sound is not mandatory for the final export of the assignment, but you are welcome to include a portion of your sound essay if you wish or the parts, the motivated pacing, and tone.
- Export your work, 1920 x1080 HD, 24 fps, H.264 (mp4)
- Include a brief (150 -200 words) write-up about your process. Provide your starting words and a description of your product/cause/company etc. State the main concept and how your compositional and animation choices (approach, style, technical) are working to support your concept. As well as how your Sonic Essay may have motivated movement and pacing. Include design decisions, technical considerations and what you learned. Bonus for discussing how this exercise changes or may influence your future designs.
